<hi style=afpcap>The Army had need of an inexpensive aircraft which could be readily adapted as a radio controlled target, with Culver proposing the Cadet with the designation PQ-8. The aircraft were fitted with a Continental O-200 engine, with the prototype designated the A-8 and later the XPQ-8. A production batch of 200 was followed by a similar number of PQ-8As which were powered by the Lycoming O-290 engine offering higher performance. The little Cadets were only 17 ft long with a wingspan of 26 ft and had a maximum speed of 116 m.p.h.</hi>
